Ballet by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, consistently appealing to audiences of all ages, is one of the best Christmas productions in the history of world theatre.
Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky received a Commission to write a fairytale ballet from Prince Vsevolozhsky, Director of Imperial theatres. The play was conceived as the main event of the season.
It is based on the tale by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann, libretto has created himself a genius choreographer Marius Petipa.
Tchaikovsky's music was called too complex for the ballet, but the premiere in December 1892, it did explain everything.
