Russian Museum

Russian Museum is the museum of Russian art, with mainly paintings presented here. You will see a fine collection of Russian icons, paintings of prominent Russian artists such as Bryullov, Repin, Aivazovsky. You will be able to compare the official genres of art with works by artists representing informal associations (Itinerants, «World of Art»). Russian impressionists and especially the famous Russian avant-garde (Malevich, Kandinsky and others) are well represented in the museum.

Our guides will show not only the museum, but also tell about the history of Russia as a whole and during specific historical periods, when one or another masterpiece was created. Thus, you will be able to evaluate them not only as works of art, but also as a reflection of historical events and outlook of people in different periods of our country's existence.

A collection of Russian art collected by the Emperor Alexander III served as the basis for the museum. Therefore, initially the museum was named after him. Currently, the museum collection has more than 400 000 exhibits and represents the period from X to XX century.
